THE FOREST VOICES TOUR
diary

March 5th 2014

Our concert at the Baka village Djoula was cut short by the Sous Préfet passing in a vehicle and demanding that we stopped. The band were sounding great and a crowd was beginning to gather - it was a real shame - as Michel Touofo the teacher from Banana explains.

Martin’s note:

We were planning to do a warm up concert and film show on this date at Ndongo, 50 km along the Ngoko from Moloundou. Baka Gbiné had done a concert there a couple of years ago. It's very remote and we had since heard that the Baka there are having a lot of problems, being beaten by eco-guards and being prevented from using their old hunting grounds. We had applied for permission and the Sous Prefet then went away. However the transport was very expensive and due to tight funds it made more sense to do the warm up concert somewhere closer and easier to get to. With the recent rains we heard that the road to Ndongo was very bad so we decided to go to Djoula, where some of the Baka musicians had relatives.

When we arrived at Djoula I would have felt happier being further from the road, if only because of the noise and dust of passing tracks. It was bad luck that the Sous Prefet happened to be passing and saw the crowd of people. More fun with him later!
